North Korea ready to learn from the outside world

North Korea is set to take a potentially giant leap out of the intellectual cold with the construction of a new all-English language university staffed by academics from around the world and teaching the cream of the country’s graduate students.

Construction of the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology is nearing completion on a 100ha plot leased by the People’s Army in the North’s capital. The Army has loaned 800 solders to build the campus, which is largely funded by a network of Christian evangelicals.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is believed to have personally ordered the site cleared for use and granted the university the right to hire staff from anywhere in the world.

The university is expected to eventually have 2600 undergraduate and postgraduate students and to help train a new generation of elite business executives and technicians.

The project’s leaders in South Korea and the United States are playing down its potential impact for fear of spooking the North’s jittery authorities, but agree that it represents potentially a seismic shift in the reclusive state’s largely frozen relations with the rest of the planet.

“It will be the country’s first international university,” said Professor Chan Mo Park, co-chair of the university and a prominent Seoul scientist.

“The North has good universities but they don’t communicate with the rest of the world. This will let everyone know that the capacity of their scientists is very high.”

Despite crumbling facilities, Pyongyang’s standards of computer science, software and applied mathematics are world-class, say experts, and its youth are bursting with pent-up business energy. The university is expected to generate spin-off businesses and eventually a Silicon Valley-style business park.

The faculty of 45 will offer an MA in business administration as well as courses on information technology and agriculture to an initial cohort of about 150 students recruited from the country’s top research institutions.

Given the scale of foreign involvement and the money poured into the new campus so far, those involved say they are confident it will open its first research laboratories this autumn and its doors to students next spring.

But the legendary unpredictability of the Kim Jong-Il government could still throw a spanner in the university’s works.

Gaesong & Industrial Park

Recently I visited Gaeseong with a South Korean humanitarian group that provides anthracite for fuel to underprivileged people in both Koreas. The group carries out a voluntary campaign in the name of “sharing love and anthracite.’’ It so far has provided the poor with over ten million pieces of processed anthracite.

Our trip to Gaeseong was to deliver another 50,000 pieces of processed anthracite in five large trucks. From Seoul we drove only about 45 minutes to reach the southern border of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). I had passed through the Panmunjeom Joint Security Area a couple of times traveling to Pyongyang before, but it was the first time for me to travel on the paved direct highway to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

Upon arrival at the Bongdukni railroad station _ about a few miles north of the complex _ we were welcomed by the vice chairman of the Gaeseong People’s Committee, who appreciated the provision of anthracite as well as our offer to help North Koreans unload the anthracite.

From Bongdukni we went to Gaeseong City, where we visited several famous historic sites of the old capital of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), including the Seonjuk bridge, where the stain of bloodshed by a king’s royal servant remains, still detectable. Standing at the courtyard of Sungkyunkwan, which was the dynasty’s highest royal educational institute, were gigantic ginkgo trees more than a thousand years old.

The buildings were impressively well maintained. On display inside the buildings were neatly arranged historical artifacts, which help visitors see what life was like in Korea a millennium ago. With other cultural assets, like the royal tombs and an old Buddhist temple, I thought Gaeseong would present itself as an excellent tourist attraction.

Then we went to a “hotel district’’ where many traditional tiled Korean homes remain undamaged as if they had never withstood the Korean War. An able tourist guide told us that these buildings are now used as lodging for tourists. We were led into one of the homes, where we had a good traditional dinner served in Korean brassware.

From there we went to the complex, which I knew was controversial from a political perspective since its inception. Opponents ask why South Korea should help North Korea when it spends scare resources on the development of missiles and nuclear weapons. Proponents argue it is a constructive approach to the eventual resolution of security and political issues.

After I saw the vast area of the industrial park _ one million pyeong (approximately 25 square miles) _ I felt there would be no way to reverse the course of inter-Korean economic cooperation. Under a 50-year lease, Hyundai Asan has cleared the land by leveling off the hills and filling the rice paddies and fields, and it is still building the necessary infrastructure to support the industrial park.

At present 22 South Korean companies _ mostly small- and medium-sized firms _ are operating in the complex and five new plants are under construction. On this North Korean territory, about 12,000 North Korean employees are working with 680 South Koreans, who are largely managers. By 2012, the complex is expected to employ over 100,000 North Koreans.

These companies produce goods _ including shoes, clothes, watches, kitchenware, plastic containers and electric cords _ mostly for South Korean consumers. Under a neo-liberal policy pursued by the ROK government, the complex makes sense as the average monthly wage is only $57, which is only half of Chinese labor costs and less than 5 percent of South Korean counterparts’ salaries.

After an overview briefing at the Hyundai Asan Control Center, we went to the Shinwon Clothing Plant, where 880 North Korean women _ who looked between 20 to 40 years-of-age _ were working hard concentrating on their jobs along the 15 production lines on two floors. There were no dividing walls on each floor. The uniformed workers all looked healthy and productive.

The plant’s manager told me he has only nine people from the South to work with the North Koreans. His company began operating in February 2005 with 330 workers on two production lines. He said his company is satisfied with the productivity and the workmanship of its North Korean employees. His company provides many facilities for the workers, including a large dining hall where the workers receive free meals, recreation rooms, showers and even a Christian chapel.

Perhaps the future of the expanding industrial park depends very much on the exportability of its products to overseas markets including the United States. This brings up two points: resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue and the inclusion of the complex as an “outward processing zone’’ as discussed but still pending resolution in the agreed Free Trade Agreement with the United States.

Without exportability, which I doubt would be fully feasible before North Korean denuclearization, the industrial complex may not be able to attract big international companies who keep looking for lower labor costs to compete in the contemporary neo-liberal global market.

There are other problems with the inter-Korean industrial park, including the transparency of the payment system, labor practices and environmental concerns. But these are only peripheral issues compared to the issue of war and peace, which also affects the South Korean economy. As the nuclear issue seems to be moving forward, and as I believe it will be resolved at the end, I do see good prospects for success of the complex.

We went to Gaeseong, a city of 300,000 people, through some poverty-stricken rural villages. It was heartbreaking to see North Korean people who looked undernourished and poorly sheltered in their rundown homes with broken windows. I saw children looking skinny, underdeveloped and hungry _ walking home after school, with their arms on the shoulders of their buddies, just like I used to do when I was their age.

I visited North Korea many times but I never had an opportunity to observe the economic plight of the North Korean people in the rural areas. I could see only a little bit of the deprivation last month when I went to Inner Geumgang Mountain through a few under-populated villages beyond the DMZ.

I know the conservatives blame the North Korean regime for this. My problem with them is such blame or hard-line policy has not helped alleviate the hardship of the poor people whose poverty is not their fault. I support humanitarian aid to the North, despite some negative views.

I know North Korea is trying hard to improve its economy in order to better feed, clothe and house its people. I have seen some encouraging indicators of change in North Korea. Once it feels free of perceived threat from outside, I expect the North to give up its nuclear program and concentrate on transforming the economy, which will eventually lead to political and social transformation as well.

It is time to work harder to resolve the security issue, while providing minimum humanitarian aid to the people in the North. Providing anthracite is a good example of humanitarian assistance, which I believe should enlist broad support from the South Korean public. What’s your take?

In a rare nod to religion, communist North Korea has welcomed 500 Buddhist monks and followers from the South to a temple dating from the 11th century when Kaesong was capital of a unified peninsula.

The visit offered an unusual glimpse of the hermit state where references to the divine, at least in the official media, are normally limited to Kim Il-sung, who became the reclusive state’s eternal president on his death in 1994, and Kim Jong-il, his son and the current leader.

North Korean officials were quick to stress that this month’s nine-hour visit to the picturesque Ryongtong temple on the outskirts of Kaesong was strictly religious fare.

“We are opening the door wide open for pilgrimages to answer the wish of Buddhist believers in the South,” Ri Chang-dok, from the North’s Council of National Reconciliation, told a small group of reporters traveling with the Buddhists.

The pilgrimage marking the restoration of the temple was the first in a series that will see more than 2,000 South Korean Buddhists travel across the heavily fortified border that has divided Korea for more than half a century.

“There won’t be any sightseeing,” Ri insisted.

North Korea watchers and critics say the hardline Pyongyang government persecutes religious followers and the only practices tolerated are carefully choreographed displays for outsiders.

FREEDOM OF RELIGION

Not so, the Council’s vice-chairman, Jong Tok-gi, told Reuters after a Buddhist service at Ryongtong.

“We have freedom of religion.”

But when a North Korean Buddhist leader spoke at the service, his words had the clear ring of politics and Pyongyang’s official obsession with one day ending the divide on the Korean peninsula.

“I have no doubt that if we make this pilgrimage a regular event and allow South Korean believers to come to the temple, North-South cooperation will deepen and that will open a shortcut to the unification of the fatherland,” said Sim Sang-jin, vice-chairman of the North’s Korea Buddhists Federation.

The North Korean Buddhists, with full heads of hair and colorful costumes looked anything but the typical monks of the South with their shaven heads and austere grey robes.

Despite Ri’s assurances that this was a strictly spiritual affair, the visitors’ buses made several stops at tourist sites in the cash-strapped state to give them the chance to buy souvenirs.

“Have you bought anything? Come on, go and buy something,” a North Korean guide urged his visitors, pointing to stalls where young women in traditional costume offered local goods ranging from mushrooms and fake Viagra to books of teachings by the country’s father-and-son leaders — all for U.S. dollars.

“We’re not going to hide anything,” said another guide, who declined to give his name, as the buses maneuvered their way through Kaesong’s residential streets where disheveled locals flashed startled looks at the gleaming vehicles.

“We have the discipline, the intelligence and the will (to make ties with the South work),” he said. All that was needed was for the wealthy South to deliver on its commitments to invest in the North.

ANCIENT CAPITAL

The birthplace of the small Chontae Buddhist sect, Ryongtong was raised from the rubble of a 17th century fire in 2005 at a cost of 5 billion won ($5.4 million) donated by its South Korean chapter.

“Kaesong was the seat of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) for 500 years,” said Ju Jung-san, a senior monk from the South. “It should now be the place of national love to lay the ground for unification.”

With such high aims, an indignant Ri dismissed criticism from some in the South that charging each visitor 170,000 won for the relatively short trip was excessive.

“I fail to understand just who these people are who are talking about money when what we have here is a pilgrimage to such a holy temple, the Ryongtong Temple.”

Chondoism, National Religion

Chondoism is the national religion of Korea. The Chondoists are enjoying their religious life to the full under the protection of the DPRK.

It was founded in 1860 with the idea “Man and God are one” as its principle, for the purpose of building an “earthly paradise” under the banner of “Poguk anmin” (defending the country and providing welfare for the people). From the outset, however, it had to undergo suppression of feudal ruling classes and foreign invaders.

Choe Je U, the founder of the religion who had been called the Most Venerable Suun, and the second leader of the religion were killed by the feudal state of Ri dynasty for their anti-feudal and anti-aggressive spirits. During the Kabo Peasant War (1894 – 1895) and the March First Popular Uprising against the Japanese imperialists, hundreds of thousands of believers were arrested, imprisoned and killed cold-bloodedly.

It was the early winter in Juche 25 (1936) that the religion met its true guardian.

President Kim Il Sung appreciated the patriotic nature of Chondoism and met Tojong (a title of a local leader of Chondoist religion) Pak In Jin. He called for firmly uniting under the banner of the national liberation, transcending differences in ideology, religious faith and political view and led a great number of believers to the sacred war against the Japanese imperialists. After national liberation, he aroused them to building of a new country.

Moved by the noble benevolence of the President who embraced and warmly looked after all the people of the country, the wife of Pak In Jin called him as “Heaven” when she was honored with his audience in 1992.

The Chondoists are also enjoying a happy life under the care of Kim Jong Il.

They are leading a free religious life with the building on a beautiful bank of the River Taedong. Chondoists who were elected deputies to the Supreme People’s Assembly are taking part in the political affairs of the country and are doing a lot of good things for the DPRK.

Pak In Jin, Kang Je Ha, Pak U Chon, Ryo Pung Gu and others who contributed to the liberation, prosperity and development of the country were laid to rest in the Patriotic Martyrs’ Cemetery.

Golden Buddha Stolen From Haeju Museum, North Korea

On the 11th, robbers raided the Haeju Historical Museum in Haejoo, North Hwanghae, stealing golden statues of Buddha and ancient Korean pottery worth a large amount, an inside source disclosed.

The source said, “On the night of 11th, golden statues of Buddha and ancient Korean pottery were stolen from Haeju Museum. The exact identity of which Buddha statues and rare artifacts were stolen has not been revealed, however, it appears the goods were rather important considering a special order was given to the border guards and the National Safety Agency has become involved.”

Haeju Historical Museum opened in 1949 and has maintained its heritage for 60 years. The museum displays a collection of ancient Korean pottery from the area and a variety of golden Buddha statues. This museum falls under the same category as the top 5 museums located in North Korea including the Central Historical Museum in Pyongyang and Kaesong Museum, Sariwon Museum and Chongjin Museum.

“If the thief escaped Hwanghae on the day of the raid, then he will be difficult to catch. However, if that is not the case, there is a high chance that the thief will be caught within the next couple of days,” said the source.

He said, “An order has already been made to strictly control the smuggling routes around the border of Shinuiju.” He added, “Stealing historical artifacts and exporting them out of the country is a crime punished with death.”

Following the food crisis in the 90s and early 2000, there were many cases where military officials, security agents and the elite frequently stole historical artifacts. The whole city was affected especially if there were many people living in the area who had inherited historical artifacts from ancestors.

However, for the past 3~4 years, there was a decrease in stolen articles as the number of ancient artifacts had been depleted and furthermore because authorities immediately punished those who stole and sold the goods overseas with capital punishment.

However, as this case shows, stealing a number of articles from museums has continued. In particular, imitations of artifacts have been sold outside the country, and North Korean authorities are facing complaints from foreign buyers. Consequently, there have been cases where affiliated persons have also been executed.

A defector who has experience in selling antiques said, “In 1993, a picture of a Great Monk Seosan was sold in Hong Kong but then returned to North Korea after it was discovered to be a fake. Parties concerned were punished.”

He said, “Precious artifacts are either sent to Pyongyang to be exhibited at the Central Historical Museum or stored separately. A curator affiliated to Mansudae Art Institution then makes a copy and sends it to either the country or, in most cases, puts it on display in Pyongyang.”

He said, “Even if the Japanese buy $10,000 worth of Nihontou (Japanese swords) with the carved seal of a Japanese Emperor, there are still many people who want to possess artifacts from the Chosun Revolutionary Museum. Even I went around until my feet were worn out carrying antiques to make money. However, most of these goods were imitations copied by Mansudae Art Institution.”

Last year, there was one case where a group of 22 people were caught stealing tombstones off royal tombs. Though it is difficult to transport these tombstones, since they weigh a minimum of 500kg and as much as 2-3tons, once they are secretly transported to China, the tombstones sell at a very high price.

The moment North Korean authorities discovered the case, Chinese authorities were contacted and a cooperative investigation begun. The tombstones were redeemed from a storage area in Dandung. At the time, the Chinese dealers were given a heavy fine and the organizer of the North Korean exports, a national security agent, was known to have committed suicide.

N.K.’s ‘juche’ ranked world’s 10th major religion

An online website named North Korea’s “juche” (self-reliance) ideology as the world’s 10th major religion, although some argue that it is more a philosophy than a religion, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday.

Adherents.com, which collected information and statistics on more than 4,200 religions around the globe, cited Christianity as having the largest number of believers at 2.1 billion. Islam has 1.3 billion, followed by Buddhism claiming some 376 million believers, while another 100 million people share African traditional faith, according to the site.

Juche was said to have 19 million believers, which is the entire North Korean population.

Some 22 religions were listed to account for the beliefs of over 98 percent of the world’s population.

The website explains juche as the official philosophy promulgated by the North Korean government and education system, initially classified as the country’s form of Marxist communism.

Christians Find Innovative Ways to Smuggle Gospel into N. Korea

In a country described as a spiritual vacuum surrounded by the watchful eyes of a totalitarian regime and oppressed by a quasi religious cult centered on its leader’s family, North Koreans desperate to keep the Gospel alive have found innovative methods to smuggle in the Word of God.

Whether it is through human transport of Bibles or North Koreans risking their lives to testify to their families upon return or balloons filled with Christian tracts, the Word of God is penetrating the country where being openly Christian can result in execution.

From within the country, evangelism is taking place through disguised missionaries and North Korean Christians repatriated by China or returning on their own free will, according to North Korean defectors at the Open Doors USA panel discussion this past week on religious persecution in North Korea.

One North Korean defector, Ms. Eom Myong-Heui, said that she was evangelized through a Chinese-Korean missionary disguised as a businessman while still living in North Korea.

Eom – who is now an assistant pastor of a church in South Korea for North Korean defectors – said that she was desperate for food during the North Korea famine in the 1990s and had resorted to partnering with the disguised missionary businessman to earn money.

The Korean-Chinese missionary would teach her the Bible whenever they met and eventually Eom became a Christian.

Yet she and the other North Korean defector on the panel agreed that the best method to spread the Gospel in the closed society is through training North Korean refugees.

“The best and most effective way is using the North Korean refugees,” stated Eom, who said defectors can call their family and relatives in North Korea and share the Gospel.

Eom explained that she speaks to her two daughters still in North Korea through a cell phone from China that cannot be monitored by the North Korean government.

“We can train those North Koreans as strong believers and connect to relatives in North Korea … and conversations can spread [the] Gospel,” she said.

“Philip Lee,” a North Korean defector now living in South Korea. added that some North Koreans are even willing to return to the North and spread the Gospel. Lee, whose real name is withheld for security reasons, said that one of the main ministries in his church composed of North Korean defectors is to train strong Christian leaders who are willing to return to North Korea and witness.

But he noted that even refugees forcefully returned to North Korea can become powerful witnesses.

Lee recalled a repatriated North Korean Christian named Brother Luke who would daily urge his prison guards and officers, “You should believe in Jesus! You should accept Jesus!” Luke reportedly continued his exclamations even during torture and before a judge in court, according to Lee. Before his martyrdom one year later, one prison guard had accepted Christ.

Meanwhile, other North Korean defectors have found innovative ways to spread the Gospel in the North while still remaining in South Korea.

Lee Minbok, founder of North Korea Christian Association, began sending large balloons filled with thousands of Christian tracts across the North-South border about three years ago. Lee, previously a scientist in North Korea, is mostly joined by a small group of defectors or those who have worked with North Korean refugees. The balloons are said to land in North Korea within 20 minutes to 1 hour from its departure in the South.

“I’m proud that North Korea is angry,” said a grinning Choi Yong-Hun, a volunteer at NKCA and a South Korean who spent nearly four years in prison in China for helping North Korean refugees, to The Christian Post. “They ask, ‘Who sent it?’ We say that God sent it. It is a very effective way to send the Gospel.”

Other ways given to evangelize North Koreans include smuggling in Bibles, as Open Doors has done over the past ten years; Christian radio broadcast; and through organizations working with North Korean refugees along the border in China.

Last week’s panel discussion in Washington was part of North Korea Freedom Week, Apr. 22-29, which seeks to raise awareness of the brutal North Korean regime and to urge stronger actions by the U.S. government and international community to press North Korea on its human rights abuse.

The week mainly ended on Saturday with international protests against China’s violent treatment or North Korean refugees at Chinese embassies around the world.

Using numerous maps, articles, and interviews I have mapped out North Korea by “industry” (or topic) on Google Earth.  This is the most authoritative map of North Korea that exists publicly today.

Agriculture, aviation, cultural, manufacturing, railroad, energy, politics, sports, military, religion, leisure, national parks…they are all here, and will captivate anyone interested in North Korea for hours.

Naturally, I cannot vouch for the authenticity of many locations since I have not seen or been to them, but great efforts have been made to check for authenticity. In many cases, I have posted sources, though not for all. This is a thorough compilation of lots of material, but I will leave it up to the reader to make up their own minds on the more “controversial” locations.  In time, I hope to expand this further by adding canal and road networks. 

I hope this post will launch a new interest in North Korea. There is still plenty more to learn, and I look forward to hearing about improvements that can be made.

A Mission to Educate the Elite

In a dramatic new sign that North Korea is emerging from isolation, the country’s first international university has announced plans to open its doors in Pyongyang this fall.

Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST) will train select North Korean graduate students in a handful of hard-science disciplines, including computer science and engineering. In addition, founders said last week, the campus will anchor a Silicon Valley-like “industrial cluster” intended to generate jobs and revenue.

One of PUST’s central missions is to train future North Korean elite. Another is evangelism. “While the skills to be taught are technical in nature, the spirit underlying this historic venture is unabashedly Christian,” its founding president, Chin Kyung Kim, notes on the university’s Web site (www.pust.net).

The nascent university is getting a warm reception from scientists involved in efforts to engage the Hermit Kingdom. “PUST is a great experiment for North-South relations,” says Dae-Hyun Chung, a physicist who retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and now works with Roots of Peace, a California nonprofit that aims to remove landmines from Korea’s demilitarized zone. To Chung, a Christian university is fitting: A century ago, Christianity was so vibrant in northern Korea, he says, that missionaries called Pyongyang “the Jerusalem of the East.”

The idea for PUST came in a surprise overture from North Korea in 2000, a few months after a landmark North-South summit. A decade earlier, Kim had established China’s first foreign university: Yanbian University of Science and Technology, in Yanji, the capital of an autonomous Korean enclave in China’s Jilin Province, just over the border from North Korea. In March 2001, the North Korean government authorized Kim and his backer, the nonprofit Northeast Asia Foundation for Education and Culture (NAFEC), headquartered in Seoul, to establish PUST in southern Pyongyang. It also granted NAFEC the right to appoint Kim as PUST president and hire faculty of any nationality, as well as a contract to use the land for 50 years.

NAFEC broke ground in June 2002 on a 1-million-square-meter plot that had belonged to the People’s Army in Pyongyang’s Nak Lak district, on the bank of the Taedong River. Construction began in earnest in April 2004. That summer, workers–a few of the 800 young soldiers on loan to the project–unearthed part of a bell tower belonging to a 19th century church dedicated to Robert Jermain Thomas, a Welsh Protestant missionary killed aboard his ship on the Taedong in 1866.

NAFEC’s fundraising faltered, however, and construction halted in fall 2004. The group intensified its Monday evening prayers and broadened its money hunt, getting critical assistance from a U.S. ally: the former president of Rice University, Malcolm Gillis, a well-connected friend of the elder George Bush and one of three co-chairs of a committee overseeing PUST’s establishment. “He made a huge difference,” says Chan-Mo Park, president of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), another co-chair. South Korea’s unification ministry also quietly handed PUST a $1 million grant–more than it has awarded to any other North-South science cooperation project. This helped the school complete its initial $20 million construction push.

At the outset, PUST will offer master’s and Ph.D. programs in areas including computing, electronics, and agricultural engineering, as well as an MBA program. North Korea’s education ministry will propose qualified students, from which PUST will handpick the inaugural class of 150. It is now seeking 45 faculty members. Gillis and other supporters are continuing to stump for a targeted $150 million endowment to cover PUST operations, which in the first year will cost $4 million. Undergraduate programs will be added later, officials say. PUST, at full strength, aims to have 250 faculty members, 600 grad students, and 2000 undergrads.

PUST hopes to establish research links and exchanges with North Korea’s top institutions and with universities abroad. “It is a very positive sign,” says Stuart Thorson, a political scientist at Syracuse University in New York who leads a computer science collaboration between Syracuse and Kimchaek University of Technology in Pyongyang. “Key to success will be achieving on-the-ground involvement of international faculty in PUST’s teaching and research.”

Some observers remain cautious, suggesting that the North Korean military could use the project to acquire weapons technology or might simply commandeer the campus after completion. A more probable risk is that trouble in the ongoing nuclear talks could cause delays. At the moment, however, signs are auspicious. Park, who plans to teach at PUST after his 4-year POSTECH term ends in August, visited Pyongyang last month as part of a PUST delegation. “The atmosphere was friendly,” he says. “The tension was gone.” The Monday prayer group continues, just in case.

20 Questions From North Korea’s Young Football Aces

“Why are so many crosses out there?” “Why do most children wear glasses?” “Can I see your mobile phone?” These were just a few of the many questions North Korea’s youth football squad had over the weekend. On the pitch, they are not different from young South Korean players. But moving around by bus or train, they were full of curiosity about the things they saw. Twenty-three members of the under-17 football team have been staying in South Korea for 20 days.

The lobby of the Suncheon Royal Tourist Hotel at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The North Korean soccer squad look trim in their black uniform, shoes in hand. They had countless questions for the South Korean officials of the Sports Exchange Association accompanying them. “What is the cross for?”, one asks, and when told asks again, “What is a church?” The answer seemed to baffle them. When an official explained that many young South Koreans wear glasses because they use computers a lot, one team member said, “In North Korea, only few children and scholars who read lots of books wear glasses.”

The players were particularly taken by mobile phones. They wondered how people could make calls without lines and play games or take pictures with their phones. Whenever officials from the association used their mobile phones, the North Korean youngsters gathered to see their phones.

When shown magazine photos and asked to pick the most beautiful among actresses, Jeon Ji-hyun, Song Hye-gyo and Beyonce Knowles, they chose Beyonce Knowles, still insisted they didn’t care.

◆ They enjoyed playing chess and cards when taking a rest.

The squad had three meals in their hotel restaurant and only left the hotel for training for three hours in the morning and afternoon. In the hotel, they spent most of the rest of their time playing Chinese card games and chess. They did not watch TV except football games. When the team was moving to Suncheon by bus, one player started reading a memoir by former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung, and others asked to borrow it.

Ri Chan-myong, the head of the North Korean youth squad, and the other eight North Korean officials accompanying them drank together with South Korean officials of the sports exchange association. The North Korean officials drank a lot, finishing off 200 bottles of soju or Korean distilled liquor during their 11 days in Jeju.

◆ “I miss my parents”

Five members got wounds in the middle of training. Those players sometimes said, “I miss my parents.” North Korean soccer players, who did not talk much when they first arrived in Jeju, began talking on the third days. At first, North Korean soccer squad ate only Kimbab(rice rolled in dried laver) and Kimchi, now they eat sushi, sliced raw fish, cake and fruits such as banana, apple and pineapple. North Korean soccer squad will move to Seoul on April twelfth and depart for North Korea on twentieth after having a friendly match on fourteenth. Kim Kyung-sung, chief executive member of the South and North Korean Sports Exchange Association, said, “North Korean soccer team is considering going out before they leave but nothing is confirmed.”
